THORNCROWN CHAPEL

Posted on June 28, 2007

A paragon of environmental design:

THORNCROWN CHAPEL - A paragon of environmental design, thorncrown chapel, arkansas, eureka springs, american institute of architects, sustainable building, sustainable design, national register of historic places, ecological architecture, environmental architecture

While walking through the woods near Eureka Springs, Ark, one might be forgiven to mistake Thorncrown Chapel for a grove of trees in the middle of the forest. The transparent glazed facade, combined with the timber trusses create the appearance of a being within grove of trees rather than a carefully constructed chapel. It is only when one is inside the chapel that one starts appreciating the small details that set it apart as a paragon of architectureal achievement: the steel joints on the trusses, the lanterns, the reflection of the glass, and finally the steel roof.

Obama + Design

i’m not making a stance here on my political views, but i found this on one of the design blogs i check. obama has some nice items out there. all the websites i’ve been checking are pretty interesting too. especially the “students for obama” which began on facebook. here’s a link to the store: store

Obama + Design:

While i tend to stay out of politics, and do keep it off this site… (although we did mention that Barack Obama started his own social network my.barackobama.com earlier – because it is interesting to see a candidate jump into the myspace/facebook realm)… i am impressed with the 008 The Movement campaign visuals: the nicely designed buttons, stickers, and shirts. Is Barack Obama trying to appeal to the designer set? Or does he really appreciate the importance of design? Anyhow, just wanted to show you some pics of the cool schwag.

THE LIGHTHOUSE: The UK’s first zero-emission home

zero-emission, zero, carbon free, no emissions, sustainable residence, sustainable house, Sheppard Robson, Kingspan Off-Site, Sustainable Homes Level 6, home, residence, offsite 2007

With the new housing regulations coming into effect in England, which will mandate that all homes in the country be emission free by 2016, the race was on for designers and builders to come up with the first prototype of what such a house will look like. Currently being exhibited in the Big Build Innovation Park area of the BRE’s OFFSITE2007 exhibition, The Lighthouse designed by Sheppard Robson, in conjunction with Arup and Kingspan Off-Site is the first house to meet these strict requirements.

That’s right. Our favorite Detroit duo, The White Stripes, releases their 6th full-length album this tuesday.
Head over to iTunes to pre-order and get a few extra tracks and a video.

From the singles they’ve released, this promises to be their most “sonically bombastic” album to date. Visit their website to check out the video of the title track, Icky Thump

More Steven Holl, what’s the deal?

Holl

Kansas City, Mo.

Steven Holl’s breathtaking addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, opening on June 9, is his most mature work to date, a perfect synthesis of ideas that he has been refining for more than a decade.

Indigo Patagonia Hotel, Chile

Posted on June 5, 2007

i’m going to chile next. just to stay at this hotel. wow.

Indigo Patagonia Hotel, Chile: “To categorize the new Indigo Patagonia hotel and spa (http://www.indigopatagonia.com) in Puerto Natales, Chile, as a cool place is to make use of the word cool in both its old and new meaning.

The old cool — as in somewhat coldish, refreshingly chilly — is a
fitting description of the six-storey, 28-room block of a building. It
is also a perfectly appropriate way for the hotel to be here in the
middle of Patagonia’s fresh magnificence.

In the new main hotel building, Chile’s favorite modern architect world heritage site tentative list (http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/85./). By Tuija Seipell”

Geeky Asthestic and Environmental Elements. A pretty good article [from all places, Wired]. I didn’t really know all this about Steven Holl. There’s a small slideshow that talks about a few of his buildings.

Parallax is the only thing that comes to mind, and maybe watercolors.

Form and Sound

Here is a pretty nice multimedia slideshow from the NY Times. Granted the narrator seems a little rushed and not too extremely interested [which is ironic because he is the reporter] it’s still a nice slideshow to look at. Especially about some upcoming work by Herzog & de Meuron and Jean Nouvel: Concert Halls.
